The Story

Unveiled as a concept at Geneva in 2010 and in customers’ hands by 2013, the 918 Spyder answered a question nobody had dared ask: could a plug-in hybrid be a hypercar? It could. The 4.6-litre, race-derived V8 (revving to ~9,000 rpm, built on the RS Spyder LMP2 architecture) plus two electric motors made a combined 875 hp / 887 PS, the front e-axle giving it all-wheel drive and torque-vectoring. It cracked 0–60 in ~2.5 s, hit 214 mph, and — in Weissach-Package trim — lapped the Nürburgring in 6:57, the first street-legal production car under seven minutes. Alongside the LaFerrari and McLaren P1 it formed the 2013 ‘Holy Trinity’ — and of the three it’s the one that proved electrification could make a hypercar faster, not slower.

Studio Motors POV

The hybrid that silenced the skeptics. The 918 is the most usable and arguably the most complete of the Holy Trinity — proof that electrification is a performance weapon, not a compromise, and the philosophical ancestor of today’s hybrid 911.

Worth Knowing About the 918 Spyder

3 Things You Didn’t Know

  • 1) Its exhausts exit at the TOP, right behind the seats — 'top pipes' that shorten the run from the exhaust manifolds/heads and save weight. 2) It will run ~12 miles on electricity alone and genuinely return ~30 mpg if you behave — a hypercar you can commute in silently. 3) The 'Holy Trinity' rivalry was never an official head-to-head: the makers never co-tested the 918, LaFerrari and P1, but the 918 was the only one quoted a sub-7:00 Nürburgring time.

5 Fast Facts

  1. • Exactly 918 built, 2013–2015. • 4.6L V8 + two e-motors = 875 hp / 887 PS combined; 0–60 ~2.5 s; 214 mph. • Nürburgring 6:57 (Weissach) — first production car under 7:00. • ~$845,000 base; Weissach Package ~+$84,000. • One of the 2013 'Holy Trinity' with LaFerrari and McLaren P1.

Provenance

Owners & what to look for

Famous Owners

FLAG: no documented/citable celebrity owner found — excluded rather than guessed. The 918-car run sold out to collectors worldwide; Weissach-Package and liveried (Martini / Salzburg) cars are the most prized.

Studio Buyer’s Brief

The Weissach Package (magnesium wheels, extra carbon, the historic liveries) is the one to want — lighter, faster, more valuable. Prioritise low miles and documented high-voltage battery health (the long-term question mark). Liveried/Weissach cars and standout Paint-to-Sample colours carry premiums. As with all the Trinity, originality and a complete record drive value.
