The Story

The Speedtail is McLaren’s love letter to its own legend. Where the F1 of 1992 put its driver in the centre with a passenger either side, the Speedtail does exactly the same — a three-seat “Hyper-GT” built not for lap times but for serene, addictive, 250-mph speed. At launch it was the fastest McLaren ever made, its teardrop body stretched to a sliver of a tail in the name of aerodynamics.

Underneath sits a hybridised 4.0 V8 making 1,036 bhp, but the Speedtail wears its tech quietly: there are no door mirrors (retractable cameras instead), the rear “ailerons” are flexible carbon that bend rather than hinge, and a “Velocity Mode” lowers the car and stows the cameras for top speed. Only 106 were built, each a bespoke MSO commission.

Chris Harris, who had the only meaningful drive, called it the most compelling McLaren since the P1. It’s the modern McLaren F1 in spirit: the one that’s about the journey, not the stopwatch.

Studio Motors POV

The Speedtail is the true heir to the McLaren F1 — not the fastest McLaren around a track, but the most special to sit in and the most serene at speed. A 106-unit piece of McLaren history that’s only going one way in value.

Worth Knowing About the Speedtail

3 Things You Didn’t Know

  • 1. Central driving seat with two passenger seats set back either side — a direct homage to the three-seat McLaren F1.
  • 2. No door mirrors: it uses retractable digital cameras, and in "Velocity Mode" it lowers ~35 mm and stows them for minimum drag at 250 mph.
  • 3. The rear "ailerons" have no hinges — they're flexible carbon-fibre that physically bend to adjust the aero.
  • 4. Just 106 built, each a bespoke MSO commission; it was McLaren's fastest car ever at launch.

5 Fast Facts

  1. 1. 1,036 bhp (1,050 PS) hybrid; 848 lb-ft; 250 mph — fastest McLaren at launch.
  2. 2. 0–186 mph (300 km/h) in 12.8 s.
  3. 3. Three seats, central driving position (F1 homage).
  4. 4. 106 built, 2019–2020; launch ~$2.25M (£2.1M).
  5. 5. Now averages ~$2.4M — appreciating.

Owners & what to look for

Famous Owners

FLAG: no widely-documented, citable individual owner found for the Speedtail in this pass (all 106 were bespoke MSO commissions to private collectors) — recorded rather than guessed.

Studio Buyer’s Brief

Every Speedtail is bespoke, so spec and provenance define value — the most tastefully or significantly commissioned cars command the most. Mileage is typically tiny; originality and complete MSO documentation matter. It’s appreciating and effectively unrepeatable, so buy the best-provenance example you can.

Questions

Speedtail FAQ

How fast is the McLaren Speedtail?

McLaren claims a top speed of 250 mph for the Speedtail, making it the fastest McLaren road car ever built and the first to surpass the 240 mph of the original F1.

How many McLaren Speedtails were made?

McLaren built exactly 106 Speedtails — a number deliberately chosen to mirror the 106 McLaren F1s produced — with every example a fully bespoke MSO commission delivered between 2019 and 2020.

Why does the McLaren Speedtail have three seats?

The Speedtail uses a central driver’s seat flanked by two passenger seats, directly referencing the McLaren F1’s iconic three-seat layout. McLaren describes it as a Hyper-GT built for speed and long-distance serenity, not track performance.

How much horsepower does the McLaren Speedtail produce?

The Speedtail’s hybrid powertrain — a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 combined with an electric motor — produces 1,036 bhp and 848 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful McLaren road car at its 2019 launch.

How much is a McLaren Speedtail worth?

McLaren Speedtail values average around $2.417 million per Classic.com as of 2025, with examples ranging from approximately $1.974 million to $3.3 million based on bespoke MSO specification and provenance.

Can you lease or finance a McLaren Speedtail?

Yes. Specialty lenders structure collector-car leases on appreciating hypercars including the Speedtail.
