The Story

If the X222 proved Maybach-as-sub-brand could work, the W223-generation car made it a phenomenon. Launched for 2021, it doubled down — a stretched, hushed, technology-drenched S-Class with a rear cabin engineered as a first-class lounge — and added the signature that now defines the brand: a hand-painted two-tone finish split by a 4 mm pinstripe, a process so involved it can tie a car up in the paint shop for a week. Two engines: the S 580 4MATIC (496 hp, 4.0 V8 mild-hybrid) and the V12 flagship S 680 4MATIC (621 hp, hand-built 6.0 biturbo).

It became a status object beyond the car world. The centenary ‘Edition 100’ — 100 V12 cars marking 100 years since the first Maybach of 1921 — went to the likes of Drake; Alicia Keys was gifted a Virgil Abloh S 680; Kim Kardashian repainted an S 580 grey and called it her ‘favorite baby ever’. And the business case is undeniable: on Mercedes’ own numbers, roughly one in three S-Classes sold globally is a Maybach — one in two in China. The sub-brand the old standalone car couldn’t sustain is now the S-Class’s most profitable corner.

Studio Motors POV

The Z223 is peak luxury-from-the-back-seat, and the sales numbers prove it isn’t a vanity project anymore. For ownership the S 580 is all the Maybach anyone needs; the V12 S 680 and the numbered Editions are for collectors and believers in the twelve-cylinder’s last act.

Owners & what to look for

Famous Owners

• Alicia Keys — S 680 by Virgil Abloh (1 of 150), gifted by Swizz Beatz, 2023
• Kim Kardashian — custom all-grey S 580; ‘my favorite baby ever’
• Floyd Mayweather — S 580 (2021)

Studio Buyer’s Brief

The S 580 (V8) is the smart buy — 496 hp is the right pace for a car about wafting; the S 680’s V12 is an indulgence (a dying breed) worth its premium over the V8 only if twelve cylinders matter to you. The Edition 100 and Virgil Abloh cars are the rare, numbered collectibles — but with no realized resale data yet, ‘collectible by rarity’ is a reasonable bet, not proof. New enough that depreciation is still doing its early, steepest work, so a lightly-used S 580 is the value play. Want the Executive/First-Class rear package and the hand-painted two-tone.
