Porsche 911 GT2 (993)
1995–1998 · Porsche 911 GT2 (993) — Sports Car, Flat-6 Twin-Turbo, designed by Tony Hatter.
The Story
The 993 GT2 is the apex air-cooled 911 — and the one that earned the ‘Widowmaker’ name. Built from 1995 to homologate Porsche’s GT2-class race car, it took the twin-turbo flat-six (430 PS, later 450 in Evo form), drove it through the REAR wheels only (the road 993 Turbo was all-wheel-drive), stripped more than 200 kg, bolted on riveted plastic wide-arches and a towering bi-plane wing, and deleted every electronic aid. The result is a brutal, boost-spiking, no-safety-net monster many regard as one of the most difficult and exciting road cars ever made — and the final air-cooled competition 911 before the water-cooled 996. Around 194 were built. It is the apex of the air-cooled grail.

The Designer
Tony Hatter
Hatter moved from Opel to Porsche in 1986 and, under Lagaaij, penned the 993 — widely regarded as one of the most beautiful 911s. He remained a long-serving Porsche exterior designer across the GT1, Cayman and special-edition projects.
Studio Motors POV
The most hardcore air-cooled 911 ever sold — the ‘Widowmaker’ is the apex of the breed. A genuine 993 GT2 is a blue-chip cornerstone; buy provenance and originality, and never underestimate it.

What Reviewers Said About 911 GT2 (993)
Worth Knowing About the 911 GT2 (993)
3 Things You Didn’t Know
- 1) The wide arches bolt on with rivets — a deliberate race-homologation touch (easy to swap/repair), and an instant visual giveaway of a real GT2. 2) It's REAR-wheel-drive on purpose — Porsche pulled the 993 Turbo's AWD to save weight and meet GT2 rules, which is exactly what made it the 'Widowmaker.' 3) It's the LAST air-cooled competition 911 — the 996 GT2 that followed was water-cooled.
5 Fast Facts
- • ~194 road cars built, 1995–1998 (street 430 PS; 1998 Evo 450 PS). • 3.6L air-cooled TWIN-turbo flat-six (M64/60R), RWD, 6-speed manual. • >200 kg lighter than the 993 Turbo it's based on. • No traction/stability control — the original 'Widowmaker.' • The apex air-cooled 911 grail: ~$1.2M–$2.4M (record ~$2.4M).

Studio Buyer’s Brief
A genuine, matching-numbers GT2 with documented history is a multi-million-dollar car — verify it’s a real GT2 (not a Turbo conversion): the riveted arches, RWD driveline and chassis numbers are the tells. Street vs the rarer 1998 Evo (450 PS). Originality, low ownership and a clean, accident-free chassis dominate value; given the reputation, a well-sorted, expertly-maintained car is worth the premium.

Questions
911 GT2 (993) FAQ
What engine does the Porsche 993 GT2 use?
The 993 GT2 uses an M64/60R 3.6-litre twin-turbocharged air-cooled flat-six producing 424 hp initially (later higher-output road versions reached about 450 hp) with 398 lb-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels only through a 6-speed manual. The true 993 GT2 Evo race car is typically quoted much higher — around 600 hp — for BPR / FIA GT1 competition.
Why is the 993 GT2 the apex air-cooled Porsche?
The 993 GT2 (1995-1998) combines the twin-turbocharged engine of the 993 Turbo with rear-wheel drive only, no stability control, and a stripped lightweight body — one of the last-of-line raw air-cooled specials. Only 194 road cars were built, with additional race-spec examples. Standard 424-hp GT2s sit below the 993 Turbo S in outright power; higher-output GT2 versions exceed it.
What is a Porsche 993 GT2 worth today?
The 993 GT2 trades in the $1,200,000-$2,400,000 range in 2025-2026 markets, with a record of $2,400,000 representing the apex of recent auction results. Its approximately 194-unit road-car production, status as the ultimate air-cooled 911, and RWD-only character have made it consistently the highest-valued standard air-cooled 911. RM Sotheby’s and Gooding handle the majority of 993 GT2 consignments.
How does the 993 GT2 compare to the 993 Turbo S?
The 993 Turbo S (444 hp, AWD, 345 built) is fast, sophisticated, and manageable; the 993 GT2 (424 hp, RWD, approximately 194 built) is rawer, lighter, and uncompromisingly demanding. The GT2 was built as a racing homologation car; the Turbo S was the ultimate road-going Turbo. Both are blue-chip air-cooled grails, but the GT2 commands roughly double the Turbo S average market value.
