Porsche 550 Spyder
1953–1957 · Porsche 550 Spyder — Sports Car, Flat-4, designed by Erwin Komenda.
The Story
The 550 Spyder was Porsche’s first purpose-built racing car — the moment the marque became a giant-killer. Tiny, light (~550 kg) and mid-engined, it carried Ernst Fuhrmann’s jewel-like 4-cam flat-four and humbled cars with twice its power on circuits across the world from 1953. Only about 90 were built (including the later spaceframe 550A). It is foundational to Porsche’s racing DNA — and, inescapably, it is the car in which James Dean died on 30 September 1955, nine days after taking delivery of his silver ‘Little Bastard.’ That tragedy made the 550 a cultural artifact as much as a competition Porsche; today an original is a multi-million-dollar piece of history.

The Designer
Erwin Komenda
Komenda was Porsche’s Austrian body-engineering chief and one of the most consequential body designers of the 20th century — he shaped both the streamlined VW Beetle and Porsche’s first sports cars. He led the firm’s bodywork from the 356 through the early 911.

Worth Knowing About the 550 Spyder
3 Things You Didn’t Know
- 1) James Dean's 'Little Bastard' (chassis 550-0055) was customised by Hollywood sign-writer Dean Jeffries with the race number 130 and the script name; Dean owned it just nine days. 2) After the crash the wreck toured as a road-safety exhibit and then VANISHED — the chassis remains lost to this day, despite a reward offered in 2005. 3) Its 4-cam Fuhrmann engine was so complex it reportedly took up to ~15 hours just to set the cam timing.

Famous Owners
James Dean — his silver 550 Spyder ‘Little Bastard’ (chassis 550-0055) is the most famous: delivered 21 September 1955 and lost in the fatal crash nine days later; the surviving transaxle later sold for $387,000. [Hagerty / type550.com]
Studio Buyer’s Brief
These are museum-grade artifacts — provenance, chassis history and documented competition record are the entire value. Genuine 550s (and the rarer spaceframe 550A) versus the countless replicas is the first question; an original with FIA papers and period race history is the grail. Originality of the 4-cam engine and gearbox is paramount. A buy-the-history, blue-chip acquisition.

Questions
550 Spyder FAQ
What engine does the Porsche 550 Spyder use?
The 550 Spyder uses the Type 547 1.5-litre four-cam air-cooled flat-four, producing approximately 110 hp in road-going form and more in racing tune. The four-cam design — engineered by Ernst Fuhrmann — was a landmark achievement, allowing the small-displacement engine to rev and breathe far beyond pushrod units of the era. The engine sat mid-ship behind the driver.
Why is the Porsche 550 Spyder historically significant?
The 550 Spyder (1953-1957) was Porsche’s first purpose-built racing car, designed to compete in international sports-car racing rather than adapted from a road car. It won its class at the 1954 Le Mans 24 Hours and proved that a small 1.5-litre Porsche could defeat far larger machinery. The 550 also became famous as the car James Dean was driving when he died in September 1955.
What is a Porsche 550 Spyder worth today?
Authentic 550 Spyders are among the most valuable Porsches in existence. Original examples trade in the $3,500,000-$4,200,000-plus range, with a Bonhams auction result of $4,185,000 recorded in 2022. Approximately 90 examples were built in total, ensuring extreme rarity. Gooding and RM Sotheby’s handle the few that come to market.
How does the 550 Spyder differ from the 356 Speedster?
The 550 Spyder is a purpose-built mid-engine racing car with the Type 547 four-cam engine; the 356 Speedster is a road car with a rear-mounted pushrod flat-four. The 550 was race-first, though period examples could be and were road-registered by private owners for street use.
Can Studio Motors source a Porsche 550 Spyder?
Yes. Given that fewer than 90 originals exist and individual examples trade above $3,500,000, each acquisition is handled as a bespoke private transaction with full FIA historic identity documentation and chassis verification.
