The Story
When the Mulsanne arrived in 2010 it was the first ground-up new Bentley designed entirely at Crewe since the W.O.-era cars of the early 1930s — a true flagship, not a re-bodied Rolls. Under that endless bonnet sat the 6¾-litre V8, by then in its final twin-turbo, cylinder-deactivating form: the last chapter of an engine first lit in 1959.
It was unapologetically vast and hand-built — Bentley’s chairman cheerfully admitted they set out to ‘build a heavy car,’ because weight here signals substance. The Mulsanne Speed then proved a 2.6-tonne saloon could reach 190 mph. When production ended in June 2020 it took the 61-year-old 6¾ V8 with it, closing an era no Bentley will reopen.
