The Story

The 996 is the most pivotal — and for years most maligned — 911 of the modern era: the first water-cooled Carrera. Launched in 1998, it abandoned the air-cooled flat-six that had defined the 911 for 35 years, adopting a water-cooled engine (and sharing its front structure and ‘fried-egg’ headlamps with the cost-saving Boxster) to meet emissions and noise rules and keep the 911 alive. Enthusiasts howled at the headlamps and, later, fretted over the M96 engine’s intermediate-shaft (IMS) bearing. But the 996 drives brilliantly, and the market has finally caught up: it’s now the smartest-value way into 911 ownership, a future classic that delivers the real 911 experience for a fraction of an air-cooled car’s price.

Studio Motors POV

The first water-cooled 911 and today’s smartest-value way into 911 ownership — once maligned, now a future classic. A sorted 996 with the IMS sorted (a 4S if you can) is a lot of real 911 for the money.

Worth Knowing About the 911 (996)

3 Things You Didn’t Know

  • 1) It's the first water-cooled 911 — and shares its front bodywork and 'fried-egg' headlamps with the Boxster, a cost-saving move that long held its values down. 2) The M96 engine's intermediate-shaft (IMS) bearing can fail (highest risk on 2000-05 single-row cars, ~8-10%); a ~$3,000 IMS-and-clutch update is the known fix, and many cars have already had it. 3) A clean 993 now costs two to three times a comparable 996 — making the 996 the value-buy 911 by a wide margin.

5 Fast Facts

  1. • 1998–2004; the FIRST water-cooled 911. • M96 flat-six, 3.4 (300 PS) → 3.6 (320 PS); RWD or AWD (C4). • Shares its front end + headlamps with the Boxster. • The IMS-bearing concern (verify the fix). • The smartest-value modern 911 — a future classic.

Studio Buyer’s Brief

Verify the IMS bearing has been updated (and the RMS) and check full service history — that’s the single most important thing on a 996. The 996.2 (2002-on) brought the 3.6 engine and a Turbo-style front facelift. The Carrera 4S (wide-body) is the most desirable base 996. Buy a sorted, documented car — it’s the value 911 buy of the moment.

Questions

911 (996) FAQ

What makes the Porsche 996 historically significant?

The 996-generation 911 (1997-2004) was the first 911 fitted with a water-cooled engine, replacing the air-cooled flat-six that had defined every 911 since 1963. The switch was driven by increasingly strict emissions and noise regulations. Progressively more stringent standards made a four-valve water-cooled engine necessary.

What is the IMS bearing issue on the Porsche 996?

The M96 engine in 996 Carrera models can suffer intermediate shaft bearing failure, with disclosed failure rates of up to 8% for single-row bearings in later cars. Failure means catastrophic engine damage. The issue does not affect 996 Turbo or GT3 models, which use the separate Mezger-derived engine. Buyers should confirm IMS remediation on any non-Turbo 996.

What is a Porsche 996 Carrera 4S worth today?

The 996 Carrera 4S trades in the $34,000-$41,000 range, with IMS-stigma keeping 996 Carrera values significantly below later 997-generation equivalents. Cars with documented IMS bearing remediation and clean service histories command the top of the range. Hagerty tracks 996 valuations by variant and year.

How does the 996 differ from the 997 Carrera?

The 997 (2005-2012) addressed nearly all criticisms of the 996: it gained a distinctive round-headlight face to replace the shared-with-Boxster fried-egg lights, a more powerful engine, a stiffer body, better interiors, and progressive IMS bearing improvements. The 996 remains the more affordable entry point to a water-cooled 911 and is increasingly viewed as an undervalued classic.

Can I buy or finance a Porsche 996 through Studio Motors?

Yes. Specialist lenders can structure financing on these modern-classic 911s.
