The Story

The 997 GT3 is, for many, the analog GT3 sweet spot. Across two iterations — the 997.1 (2006, 3.6) and the more powerful 997.2 (2009, 3.8, 435 PS) — it took the Mezger flat-six to its naturally-aspirated peak as a road car: 8,400 rpm, a perfect hydraulically-assisted steering rack, a six-speed manual, and a chassis that still talks to you. It’s the last GT3 with a manual-only gearbox and a Mezger engine before the 991 went PDK-and-9A1 — and that combination of analog purity and Mezger reliability is exactly why the 997.2 GT3 is so prized today.

Questions

911 GT3 (997) FAQ

What engine does the Porsche 997 GT3 use?

The 997.2 GT3 (2009-2011) uses the naturally aspirated Mezger M97/77 3.8-litre flat-six producing 429 hp (435 PS) at 7,600 rpm and 317 lb-ft of torque, with a redline commonly quoted around 8,500 rpm. (The earlier 997.1 GT3 peaked at 8,400 rpm.) It drives the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual.

Why do enthusiasts prize the 997 GT3 Mezger engine?

The Mezger engine used in all 997 GT3 variants is a dry-sump naturally aspirated flat-six descended from Porsche’s Le Mans racing engines. It does have an intermediate shaft — but supported by oil-pressure-fed plain bearings, not the sealed ball-bearing IMS design used in the affected M96/M97 Carrera engines. That’s why enthusiasts consider it far more robust than the Carrera-family engines of its era.

What is a Porsche 997 GT3 worth today?

The 997 GT3 trades in the $130,000-$180,000 range in 2025-2026 markets and has been appreciating as the last Mezger-engined naturally aspirated GT3 in the 997 body. Low-mileage 997.2 GT3 RS variants command considerably more. Hagerty tracks condition-based valuations for all 997 GT3 variants.

How does the 997 GT3 compare to the 997 GT3 RS?

The 997 GT3 RS adds wider bodywork, an adjustable rear wing, and further weight reduction relative to the standard GT3. The 997.2 GT3 RS 3.8 was rated around 450 PS (about 444-450 hp) — more than the 997.2 GT3’s 429 hp. The RS is track-focused, lighter, and more aero-aggressive.

Can I buy or finance a Porsche 997 GT3 through Studio Motors?
