The Story
The W1 is McLaren’s new number one — the 2024-revealed successor to the P1 and, in spirit, the F1, completing the trilogy of cars McLaren reserves its single-digit naming for. Unveiled on the 50th anniversary of McLaren’s first Formula 1 world title (the “W” is for that World Championship mindset), it’s the most powerful McLaren road car ever: 1,258 bhp from an all-new MHP-8 V8 hybrid — an engine unrelated to the existing M840T, revving to 9,000 rpm.
True to McLaren, the W1 chases feel over bragging rights: its line director told Autocar that “ultimate top speed — Top Trumps — is not a number that we’re chasing.” Instead it leans on a radical ground-effect, active-aero chassis to make 1,258 bhp usable through the rear wheels alone. evo called it “a technical tour de force.”
Production is capped at 399, all sold, from 2025. It is the new apex of the McLaren road-car range — and an instant blue-chip.
