Maybach Mercedes-Maybach SL
Revealed Aug 2024 (Monterey Car Week); production from 2025, US MY2026 · Maybach Mercedes-Maybach SL — Grand Tourer, V8 Twin-Turbo, designed by Gorden Wagener.
The Story
The Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series, shown at Monterey Car Week in August 2024, is the brand’s first two-seater of the modern era — a Maybach roadster, a thing that hadn’t existed since the marque’s pre-war heyday. Underneath it’s a Mercedes-AMG SL (R232) with the 4.0 twin-turbo V8 (577 hp) and 4MATIC+, but Maybach has softened it deliberately: gentler engine mounts, a quieter exhaust, retuned suspension and an insulated soft-top, all aimed at grand-touring calm rather than AMG aggression. As one reviewer put it, ‘as loud as the SL 680 may look, it’s not too keen to raise its voice.’
And it does look loud. ‘Monogram’ is literal — more than 800 ‘MM’ logos scattered across the car, a Louis-Vuitton-handbag treatment with a monogram hood as a paid option. Unlike the strictly-limited S 650 Cabriolet, this is regular production; the two launch colourways, Red Ambience and White Ambience, are simply the first-year schemes. Early dealer markups have been predictably silly — a 15-mile car listed near $300k against a $224,900 sticker — but that froth fades the way it always does with soft-launch Maybachs.

Studio Motors POV
The Maybach SL is the most extroverted car the sub-brand has made — a deliberately mellowed AMG SL wrapped in 800 monograms. It’s a statement piece; buy it new if you must be first, but the value will be in the lightly-used cars a couple of years out.

What Reviewers Said About Mercedes-Maybach SL
Worth Knowing About the Mercedes-Maybach SL
3 Things You Didn’t Know
- • It's NOT a limited edition — unlike the 300-unit S 650 Cabriolet, the SL 680 is regular production; the two 'Ambience' colourways are just launch schemes.
- • 'Monogram' is literal: 800+ 'MM' logos across the car (Autoblog likened it to a Louis Vuitton bag), with the monogram hood a ~$6,500 option.
- • It's a deliberately softened AMG SL 63 — same 577 hp V8, but softer mounts, quieter exhaust, retuned suspension and an insulated Maybach soft-top; it rides on the AMG SL (R232), not the S-Class.

Studio Buyer’s Brief
Brand new, so it’s about the spec, not the search. The Monogram Series buys Maybach styling/ambience over an AMG SL 63 (illuminated grille, rose-gold details, 21″ forged wheels, Crystal White Nappa, insulated soft-top, softer calibration) — a comfort-and-status play, not a performance upgrade. Choose between Red and White Ambience; Manufaktur paint and the monogram hood add cost. Expect an early-adopter premium now and meaningful depreciation later, as with every soft-launch Maybach — the patient buyer waits.
