The Story

The 812 Superfast arrived at the 2017 Geneva show as the apex of a bloodline that traces to Ferrari’s very first cars — a front-engined, naturally aspirated V12 GT built without apology in an age sprinting toward turbos and hybrids. Successor to the F12berlinetta, it bored the F12’s 6.3L out to 6,496 cc (the F140 GA): 789 hp at a screaming 8,500 rpm, which Ferrari billed as the most powerful naturally aspirated production-car engine ever made. 0–62 in 2.9 s, on past 211 mph.

But the headline number undersells why it matters. This was the car where Ferrari quietly conceded the NA V12’s twilight even as it built the breed’s high-water mark. Manzoni’s Ferrari Styling Centre paired aggressive aero with the first electric power steering (EPS) ever fitted to a Ferrari and a recalibrated rear-wheel-steering system (Virtual Short Wheelbase 2.0) inherited from the F12tdf. The name reaches into history — ‘Superfast’ last graced a production Ferrari with the 500 Superfast of 1964.

Within a few years it spawned an open GTS and the hardcore 819-hp 812 Competizione, then handed off to the 12Cilindri in 2024. Taken together, the 812 reads as the last great front-engined NA V12 GT — a final, defiant statement of an engine architecture Ferrari has spent a century perfecting, just as the rules were about to change.

Studio Motors POV

The 812 Superfast is the sound of a curtain coming down at full volume — a high-rpm farewell to the front-engined naturally aspirated Ferrari V12, built at the exact moment the industry stopped building them. Decades from now, the cars that revved hardest with nothing between throttle and combustion will be the ones collectors regret selling.

Worth Knowing About the 812 Superfast

3 Things You Didn’t Know

  • • The 'Superfast' name is a 1960s revival — last used on the 500 Superfast of 1964, a 36-unit Pininfarina flagship unveiled at Geneva, the same stage where the 812 debuted 53 years later.
  • • It was the FIRST Ferrari ever fitted with electric power steering (EPS), integrated with Side Slip Control and rear-wheel steering to keep 789 hp manageable.
  • • It seeded two spinoffs: the open 812 GTS (2019) and the limited 812 Competizione — exactly 999 coupes + 599 targa Competizione A, both sold out, engine up to 819 hp.

5 Fast Facts

  1. • 6.5L NA V12 (F140 GA): 800 PS / 789 hp @ 8,500 rpm, 530 lb-ft @ 7,000 rpm.

  3. • Billed by Ferrari (2018) as the most powerful naturally aspirated production-car engine ever at launch.
  4. • Front mid-engine, rear transaxle, 7-speed DCT.
  5. • Debuted 2017 Geneva; coupe built 2017–2022; 812 Competizione followed 2021–2022.

Owners & what to look for

Famous Owners

Gordon Ramsay — took delivery of a matte-green-with-black-stripe 812 Superfast specced by dealer HR Owen (Motor1, Jun 2018). Mariano Rivera (Baseball Hall of Fame closer) — configured his 812 at the Maranello Atelier (Ferrari of San Francisco dealer blog, Mar 2017). (Carlos Sainz Jr.’s documented car is the 812 Competizione, not the base Superfast — noted, not conflated.)

Studio Buyer’s Brief

The standard Superfast coupe is the purist’s choice and value entry; the 812 GTS adds open-air drama; the 812 Competizione is the blue-chip collectible — capped, sold out, lighter, 30 hp stronger, most upside. The V12 is considered bulletproof with disciplined servicing; the gremlins are electronic/consumable — avoid battery-drain history (a trickle charger is mandatory), and on 2017–18 cars watch for infotainment bugs, suspension-sensor faults and the occasional (expensive) rear-steer fault, plus fuel-pump replacements, carbon-ceramic squeal and fast front-tyre wear. Buy on documented history and honest low mileage.

Questions

812 Superfast FAQ

What engine powers the Ferrari 812 Superfast?

The 812 Superfast is powered by Ferrari’s 6.5-litre F140 GA naturally aspirated V12 producing 789 hp (800 CV) at 8,500 rpm — Ferrari positioned it as its most powerful road-going engine at launch and a front-engined production-car benchmark at 123 CV/litre specific output.

What does Superfast mean in the Ferrari 812 Superfast?

The name revives Ferrari’s historic Superfast show-car lineage. The 410 Superfast debuted at the 1956 Paris Motor Show — a Pininfarina-bodied one-off on a competition V12 chassis — and further Superfast concept cars followed through the early 1960s before the name was retired.

How fast is the Ferrari 812 Superfast 0-60?

Ferrari claims 2.9 seconds to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) and a top speed of 211 mph (340 km/h). The 812 Superfast was also the first Ferrari production car to use electric power steering rather than a hydraulic rack.

Can you source a Ferrari 812 Superfast through Studio Motors?

Yes. The 812 Superfast and 812 GTS are among the most sought-after front-engine Ferraris of the modern era.

What replaced the Ferrari 812 Superfast?

The Ferrari 12Cilindri, revealed in 2024, succeeded the 812 Superfast as the front-engine naturally aspirated V12 flagship. It produces 830 cv from the same 6.5-litre V12 architecture and meets current emissions standards without hybridization.
