Porsche Boxster (986)
1996–2004 (Boxster S 2000–2004) · Porsche Boxster (986) — Sports Car, Flat-6, designed by Grant Larson.
The Story
The 986 Boxster is, quite simply, the car that saved Porsche. By the early 1990s the company was in deep financial trouble — the 911 was ageing and expensive, sales were sliding, and Porsche needed an affordable, profitable, modern car fast. Inspired by the Mazda MX-5 and aided by Toyota-style manufacturing methods, it built the Boxster: a mid-engined, water-cooled flat-six roadster that shared its front structure (and headlamps) with the new 996, slashing costs. It launched in 1996 to acclaim — beautifully balanced thanks to its mid-mounted engine, genuinely fun, and attainable — and became the best-selling Porsche ever to that point, restoring the company to health. Today it’s a brilliant, underrated used-performance bargain.

Studio Motors POV
The car that saved Porsche — and a hugely underrated modern classic. A sorted 986 (IMS addressed), ideally a 3.2 S, is sublime mid-engine fun for remarkably little money.

What Reviewers Said About Boxster (986)
Worth Knowing About the Boxster (986)
3 Things You Didn’t Know
- 1) It literally saved Porsche — the company was near financial crisis, and the Boxster (plus shared development with the 996) restored profitability. 2) Porsche studied the Mazda MX-5's success and adopted Toyota production methods to build it cheaply and well. 3) It shared its front structure and 'fried-egg' headlamps with the 996 — a cost-saving link that ties the two cars' fortunes (and reputations) together.
5 Fast Facts
- • 1996–2004; the best-selling Porsche of its era. • Mid-engine, water-cooled flat-six (2.5 → 2.7 / 3.2 S). • Shared its front end and headlamps with the 996 911. • Near-perfect mid-engine balance — superb handling. • A genuine modern-classic bargain (watch the IMS/RMS).

Studio Buyer’s Brief
The 3.2 Boxster S is the performance pick; later (2003-on) cars got a glovebox and detail improvements. Crucially, check for the M96 engine’s IMS-bearing and RMS issues — a documented service history (and ideally an IMS update) is essential. Otherwise a sound, sorted 986 is one of the best-value ways into mid-engine Porsche ownership.

Questions
Boxster (986) FAQ
What engine does the Porsche 986 Boxster S use?
The 986 Boxster S uses a naturally aspirated 3.2-litre M96 flat-six producing 258 hp (260 PS) in its final 2003-2004 form. It sits mid-ship behind the driver and ahead of the rear axle, driving the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual or 5-speed Tiptronic.
How did the 986 Boxster save Porsche?
In the early 1990s Porsche was in severe financial difficulty, with 911 sales declining and no affordable model in the range. The 986 Boxster, launched in 1996, restored profitability and became Porsche’s best-selling model for several years. It bought the company the time and capital needed to develop the Cayenne SUV, which secured Porsche’s long-term future.
What is the IMS bearing issue on the 986 Boxster?
The M96 flat-six in the 986 Boxster can suffer intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing failure, which causes catastrophic engine damage if the bearing collapses. Single-row bearings used in later 986s have a higher failure rate than the dual-row items in earlier cars. Buyers should verify the IMS bearing has been replaced or upgraded; cars with documented remediation are worth meaningfully more.
What is a Porsche 986 Boxster S worth today?
Clean manual 986 Boxster S examples trade in the $13,000-$30,000 range in the current market, with documented IMS remediation and low mileage pushing toward the top of the band. Hagerty tracks 986 Boxster valuations by year and condition.
How does the 986 Boxster S compare to the 987 Boxster S?
The 987 Boxster S (2005-2012) replaced the 986 with a stiffer, more refined body and improved interior. Power evolved across the run — 280 hp at launch, rising to 295 hp for the facelift, and 310 hp on later variants. The 986 is lighter and purer to some purists. Note: 987.1 cars still have IMS exposure (M96/M97 engines); 987.2 (2009+) switched to the 9A1 direct-drive engine and eliminated the IMS issue.
