Porsche 911 GT3 (996)
1999–2005 (996.2 GT3 2003–2005) · Porsche 911 GT3 (996) — Sports Car, Flat-6, designed by Pinky Lai.
The Story
The 996 GT3 is where the GT3 legend begins. Launched in 1999 as a road-legal homologation special for Porsche Motorsport, it took the bulletproof, race-derived Mezger flat-six — a dry-sump, 3.6-litre water-cooled engine with the architecture of the 911 GT1 Le Mans car — and dropped it into a stripped, stiffened, track-focused 911. No turbo, no AWD: a high-revving ~360-PS naturally-aspirated flat-six, a manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive, and a singular focus on driving. It established the formula — Mezger engine, motorsport intent, road usability — that every GT3 since has followed, and as the first (and a Mezger), it’s an increasingly collectible modern classic.

The Designer
Pinky Lai
Born in Hong Kong and trained in Rome and London, Lai is best known for the controversial-but-crucial 996 — the first 911 designed from scratch since 1964 — whose platform-sharing with the Boxster helped save the company.
Studio Motors POV
Where the GT3 dynasty starts — and a Mezger. An under-appreciated modern classic on the rise; buy an honest, well-documented car before the rest of the market catches on.

What Reviewers Said About 911 GT3 (996)
Worth Knowing About the 911 GT3 (996)
3 Things You Didn’t Know
- 1) Its Mezger engine shares architecture with the 911 GT1 and 962 Le Mans racers — and crucially does NOT have the IMS-bearing failure that plagues the regular 996 Carrera. 2) The 996.1 GT3 (1999) was never officially sold new in the US — the GT3 only reached America with the facelifted 996.2 in 2004. 3) It spawned the 996 GT3 RS (2003), an even lighter, rarer homologation step.
5 Fast Facts
- • Launched 1999 (996.2 from 2003/04); the FIRST 911 GT3. • 3.6L NA Mezger flat-six (M96/79), ~360–381 PS; RWD, manual. • Race-derived dry-sump Mezger — no IMS issue. • US-market GT3 only arrived with the 996.2 (2004). • An appreciating modern classic / Mezger collectible.

Studio Buyer’s Brief
The Mezger engine is robust, but verify full service history and originality; the 996.2 (2003-05) is the more powerful (381 PS) and US-available version. The 996 GT3 RS is the rarer, pricier step. Track history is common — a well-sorted, honest car with documentation beats a cheap unknown. As the first GT3 and a Mezger, it’s a buy-and-hold.

Questions
911 GT3 (996) FAQ
What engine does the Porsche 996 GT3 use?
The 996 GT3 uses the Mezger-derived M96/79 naturally aspirated 3.6-litre flat-six, based on the racing engine from the 962 and 911 GT1-98. The 996.2 GT3 produces 381 hp (385 PS). It’s fundamentally different from the standard M96 Carrera engine (different case, dry sump, no failure-prone IMS ball bearing), though it does share some auxiliary components.
Why is the 996 GT3 significant in Porsche history?
The 996 GT3 debuted in 1999 as the first road-legal 911 to bear the GT3 name, carrying a motorsport-derived engine descended from the 962 Le Mans racer. It was denied to North American buyers until the 996.2 version in 2004. Its Mezger engine — shared with the 996 Turbo and GT2 — is free of the IMS bearing issue that affects 996 Carrera models.
What is a Porsche 996 GT3 worth today?
The 996.2 GT3 trades in the $100,000-$110,000 range, appreciating steadily as the original Mezger-engined GT3 gains recognition. The rare 996 GT3 RS (approximately 682 built) commands around $214,000. Hagerty tracks both variants with condition-based valuations.
How does the 996 GT3 differ from the 996 Carrera in reliability?
The 996 GT3’s Mezger engine is fundamentally different from the M96 used in the 996 Carrera. It uses a dry-sump system and a different crankcase design inherited from racing. Mezger GT3/Turbo/GT2 engines do have an intermediate shaft, but it’s supported by oil-fed plain bearings — not the serviceable ball-bearing IMS design that causes failures in M96/M97 Carrera engines.
