The Story

The 993 is the last air-cooled 911 — and, to a great many enthusiasts, the most beautiful. Built from 1994 to 1998, it was a comprehensive reinvention of the air-cooled formula: a new multi-link rear suspension finally tamed the old 911’s lift-off twitchiness, the body (Tony Hatter’s, under Harm Lagaaij) smoothed the classic shape into something sleeker and more modern without losing an ounce of 911-ness, and the 3.6-litre flat-six gained Varioram (285 hp). It is the bridge between the raw analog 911 and the water-cooled modern era — and because it’s the last of the air-cooled cars, it carries a blanket blue-chip premium across every variant.

Studio Motors POV

The last air-cooled 911 and, for many, the prettiest — the perfect bridge between analog soul and modern usability. A clean, original 993 (a wide-body S if you can) is a blue-chip every collection wants.

Worth Knowing About the 911 (993)

3 Things You Didn’t Know

  • 1) The 993 introduced the 911's first multi-link rear suspension — the single biggest reason it drives so much better than every air-cooled 911 before it. 2) It's the last air-cooled 911 — a status that gives even base Carreras a collector premium the water-cooled 996 that followed never enjoyed. 3) The wide-body Carrera S / Carrera 4S wear the Turbo's bodyshell without the turbos — the coveted 'Turbo-look.'

5 Fast Facts

  1. • 1994–1998 — the LAST air-cooled 911. • 3.6L air-cooled flat-six; Varioram 285 hp (early cars 272). • The first 911 with multi-link rear suspension. • Designed by Tony Hatter (under Harm Lagaaij) — 'arguably the prettiest 911.' • A blanket blue-chip: clean cars climbing, wide-body S models at a premium.

Studio Buyer’s Brief

The wide-body Carrera S / 4S command the premium (Turbo looks, no turbos); Varioram (1996-on, 285 hp) over early 272-hp cars; manual over Tiptronic. Check for accident/rust history and oil leaks; the last-air-cooled premium means even tidy Carreras aren’t cheap. Originality and history drive value across the board.

Questions

911 (993) FAQ

Why is the Porsche 993 called the last air-cooled 911?

The 993 (1994-1998) was the final 911 generation to use an air-cooled flat-six engine, a technology that had defined every 911 since 1963. Its successor, the 996, switched to water cooling. The 993’s air-cooled status has made standard 993 examples especially prized in current classic-Porsche markets versus later water-cooled equivalents.

What engine does the Porsche 993 Carrera S use?

The 993 Carrera S uses an M64/21 3.6-litre naturally aspirated air-cooled flat-six producing 285 hp and 251 lb-ft of torque through a 6-speed manual or Tiptronic S, driving the rear wheels in a wide-body configuration derived from the 993 Turbo. (The 993 Turbo-spec brake/suspension package was reserved for the Carrera 4S, not the RWD Carrera S.)

What is a Porsche 993 Carrera S worth today?

The 993 Carrera S averages approximately $160,000 in 2025-2026 markets, with the wide-body S commanding a premium over the standard Carrera. Manual coupes in excellent condition command the highest values. Note: 993 Carrera S Cabriolets are rare Porsche Exclusive / special-order cars, not a standard production body style.

How does the 993 differ from the 964 it replaced?

The 993 (1994-1998) introduced a new multi-link rear suspension replacing the 964’s semi-trailing arms, dramatically improving handling stability and eliminating the snap oversteer tendency of earlier 911s. The engine was revised for better refinement, and the body received updated styling. The 993 is widely regarded as the most resolved and satisfying air-cooled 911 to drive quickly; the 964 is considered the rawer, more characterful predecessor.

Can I buy or finance a Porsche 993 through Studio Motors?
