Maybach Maybach 62
2002–2012 · Maybach Maybach 62 — Limousine, V12 Twin-Turbo, designed by Olivier Boulay.
The Story
The Maybach 62 was the long car — 6.2 metres of it — and the one that best explained what the whole doomed standalone brand was for. Where the 57 was an owner-driver flagship, the 62 was a chauffeur’s limousine built on the principle that the best seat in the house is the back one. The rear was a two-room first-class lounge: seats reclining up to 47 degrees on seven electric motors, calf and foot rests, a fridge, an electro-transparent panoramic roof that switched from clear glass to opaque at the touch of a button, and an optional partition wall — a real chauffeur divider with intercom and curtains — that turned the cabin into a private office on wheels.
It was magnificent and a commercial disaster. The 62 shared the 57’s problems — too much visible S-Class, not enough mystique against a Rolls-Royce Phantom — and its fate: of ~3,000 Maybachs sold before Daimler killed the brand in 2012, only 1,058 were 62s, of which the AMG-powered 62 S accounts for roughly 492. The afterlife splits in two: ordinary 62s depreciated savagely (a documented 2009 car with the partition sold all-in for $210,000 against a $465,540 sticker), while the 62 S and the specials it spawned — the Landaulet, the Zeppelin — held value on rarity. It remains the most car-as-architecture the modern Maybach ever built.

Studio Motors POV
The 62 is the purest expression of the Maybach idea — a car designed from the back seat outward — and the modern sub-brand’s most ambitious cabin. The maths are stark: an ordinary 62 is staggering value, but only if the rear-cabin technology that justifies it still works. Buy the 62 S, or buy the best-documented car you can find.

What Reviewers Said About Maybach 62
Worth Knowing About the Maybach 62
3 Things You Didn’t Know
- • The panoramic roof switches from clear to opaque electrically — an electro-transparent (electrochromic) glass panel run from the rear console, not just a tint; the same tech ran the optional partition.
- • The rear seats recline up to 47 degrees on seven electric motors, with a fold-out calf rest and footrest (to 110 degrees) and five memory positions — business-class made literal.
- • The optional partition wall — a retractable electro-transparent divider with intercom, curtains and later a 19" screen — was a ~$23,780–$30,250 option that made the 62 a true two-room limousine.
5 Fast Facts
- • ~6.17 m long (6,165–6,171 mm) — among the longest production sedans of its era.
- • Curb weight ~2,805 kg (6,184 lb).
- • 62 S: 604 hp (612 PS) 6.0 biturbo V12, 1,000 Nm (facelift rose to 621 hp); base 62 = 5.5L, 550 PS.
- • Early-2008 US MSRP: ~$431,055 (62) / ~$492,602 (62 S).
- • 1,058 Maybach 62s built; the 62 S (~492) is the rarer half.
Provenance
Owners & what to look for
Famous Owners
• None individually verified. The 62 was built for chauffeur-driven principals and heads of state, but no named celebrity owner of a standalone W240 62 clears a reliable sourcing bar.
• FLAG: Roman Abramovich (armored 62s) = unconfirmed rumor, excluded.
• FLAG: Kim Jong-un’s Hanoi limo was a later Mercedes-Maybach S 600 Pullman Guard, NOT the W240 62 — common misattribution, excluded. Most celebrity ‘Maybachs’ are 57 S or Landaulet.
Studio Buyer’s Brief
The 62 S (AMG 6.0 V12) is the one collectors want and the rarer half; a clean base 62 is the value play for pure chauffeur use. But the 62 is a harder used buy than the 57: its whole value lives in the rear-cabin theatre — partition, electro-transparent roof, seven-motor seats, intercom — and every one of those is a low-volume, Maybach-specific system that’s expensive and slow to fix. Add the air/hydraulic suspension and dense early-2000s electronics. Buy on the condition of the rear-cabin tech and documented service history, not mileage; budget ~$2k–$5k/yr and a marque specialist.

Questions
Maybach 62 FAQ
What makes the Maybach 62 different from the Maybach 57?
The Maybach 62 is 6.2 meters long versus the 57’s 5.7 meters, adding about 44 cm (17 in) of rear-seat space via a longer wheelbase. The 62 targeted chauffeur-driven buyers, while the shorter 57 was designed with driver-focused customers in mind.
What engine and horsepower does the Maybach 62 S have?
The 62 S uses the M285 6.0-liter biturbo V12 producing 604 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. The base 62 used the smaller 5.5-liter variant at 543 hp, shared with the base Maybach 57.
How many Maybach 62 and 62 S units were produced?
Mercedes-Benz produced 1,550 Maybach 62s in total: 1,058 base models and 492 62 S variants, across a production run from 2002 to 2012.
How much has the Maybach 62 depreciated in value?
The Maybach 62 originally sold for around $385,000 and has since lost the vast majority of that value. Carbuzz describes its depreciation as one of the steepest in ultra-luxury automotive history.
