The Story

The 991.1 is the last naturally-aspirated base 911 — and that, more than anything, defines its place in history. Launched in 2011 on an all-new, longer, lighter platform, it was bigger, faster, more refined and more grown-up than the 997, with a sweet 3.4-litre (Carrera) or 3.8-litre (Carrera S) flat-six revving cleanly to over 7,000 rpm. Its one controversy was the switch to electric power steering — quicker and more accurate, but with less of the chatty feedback enthusiasts loved in the hydraulic 997. When the facelift 991.2 (2016) turbocharged the entire Carrera range, the 991.1 instantly became the final naturally-aspirated, free-breathing base 911 — a status that’s quietly turning it into a future classic.

Studio Motors POV

The last naturally-aspirated base 911 — bigger and more grown-up than the 997, and a quietly-appreciating future classic for that NA, free-revving flat-six. A manual 991.1 (a GTS if you can) is the one to seek; history and spec drive value.

Studio Buyer’s Brief

As the last NA base 911, manual cars and the wide-body Carrera S/4S and Carrera GTS are the most desirable. The 9A1 engine is robust (a rare bore-scoring issue on some early cars is worth checking). Verify history and spec; a manual 991.1 GTS is the connoisseur’s pick. A clean, documented car is a smart, appreciating modern-classic buy.
