The Story

The G-Series is the 911 that defined the breed for a generation — the long-running, impact-bumpered classic built from 1974 to 1989 that most people picture when they think ‘1980s 911.’ It spanned the 911 SC (1978-83, 3.0-litre) and the 911 Carrera 3.2 (1984-89), evolving the original 911 with the federally-mandated impact bumpers, a galvanised (rust-proofed) body, and steadily more usable power and reliability. The 3.2 Carrera, especially with the superb G50 gearbox introduced for 1987, is regarded as one of the most usable, durable and characterful classic 911s of all — the analog air-cooled 911 you can actually drive every day. Once the cheap way into a classic 911, the whole G-Series is now firmly on the rise.

Worth Knowing About the 911 (G-Series)

3 Things You Didn’t Know

  • 1) It introduced the galvanised, rust-protected body — a big reason so many survive, and why it became the durable, usable classic 911. 2) The 1987 switch to the Getrag G50 gearbox (with a hydraulic clutch) transformed the 3.2 Carrera — G50 cars command a clear premium over the earlier 915-gearbox cars. 3) It spans both the 911 SC and the 3.2 Carrera — and underpins the rare, lightweight 3.2 Carrera Clubsport.

Studio Buyer’s Brief

The 3.2 Carrera with the G50 gearbox (1987-89) is the sweet spot — more usable, more durable; SCs are the value entry. Check for rust (even on galvanised cars, at the usual spots), accident history and service records; the 3.2 Carrera Clubsport is the rare collector pick. A sorted, documented, matching-numbers car is a brilliant, usable, appreciating classic 911.
