Porsche 911 Carrera RS (964)
1992–1993 · Porsche 911 Carrera RS (964) — Sports Car, Flat-6, designed by Benjamin Dimson.
The Story
The 964 Carrera RS is the purist’s 964 — the lightweight, stripped-out, track-honed homologation special that revived the hallowed ‘RS’ badge for the modern era. Built from 1992, it took the 964 Carrera 2, deleted the sound deadening, rear seats and electric toys, fitted thinner glass and an aluminium bonnet, lowered and stiffened the suspension by 40 mm, added a blueprinted 260-PS version of the 3.6 flat-six and a close-ratio gearbox — and turned a usable 911 into a road-legal Carrera Cup racer. It is raw, uncompromising and utterly analog, the most exciting 964 of all, and (in Europe-market form — it never officially came to the US) a genuine grail.

Studio Motors POV
The analog 964 grail — a Carrera Cup racer you can register. The 964 RS (a lightweight if you can) is one of the purest driver’s 911s ever made; provenance and originality are everything.

Worth Knowing About the 911 Carrera RS (964)
3 Things You Didn’t Know
- 1) It was never officially sold new in the US — which is exactly why clean US-market examples are so rare and sought-after. 2) It came in flavours: the lightweight, the Touring, the hardcore Clubsport (cage, no carpets), and the very rare RS 3.8. 3) It's essentially a Carrera Cup race car with number plates — period reviewers called it 'uncouth, uncompromising and utterly fantastic.'

Studio Buyer’s Brief
Genuine RS provenance and matching numbers are essential — and the lightweight is the most coveted (over the Touring); the Clubsport and RS 3.8 are rarer still. Verify it’s a real RS (not a tribute), check chassis/originality, and prize cars with documented history. A US-legal (Show or Display / 25-year) car commands a premium Stateside. Buy the history.

Questions
911 Carrera RS (964) FAQ
What is the Porsche 964 Carrera RS?
The 964 Carrera RS (1992-1993) is a lightweight homologation special built in approximately 2,282 examples for European markets, primarily in Lightweight trim. It uses a 3.6-litre flat-six producing 256 hp in a stripped body with thinner glass, deleted rear seats, and a revised suspension tuned for circuit use. It was not officially sold in the United States, where the softer RS America filled a separate market role.
What engine does the Porsche 964 Carrera RS use?
The 964 Carrera RS uses the M64/03 3.6-litre naturally aspirated flat-six producing 260 PS (~256 hp) and 240 lb-ft of torque through a 5-speed G50/10 manual, driving the rear wheels. Weight reduction versus the standard Carrera came from stripped trim, thinner glass, and Recaro sport seats.
What is a Porsche 964 Carrera RS worth today?
The 964 Carrera RS Lightweight averages approximately $242,000 in 2025-2026 markets, with high-quality examples reaching $533,000. Values have appreciated strongly as the model benefits from both the air-cooled 911 premium and its RS homologation status. Hagerty tracks the 964 Carrera RS with dedicated valuations separate from the standard Carrera 2.
How does the 964 Carrera RS compare to the 993 Carrera RS?
The 964 RS (1992-1993, approximately 2,282 built) and the 993 RS (1995-1996, approximately 1,014 built) are both lightweight air-cooled homologation specials. The 993 RS uses a 300 PS 3.8-litre engine and multi-link rear suspension; it’s rarer and more powerful than the 964 RS and commands a significant premium in current markets.
Can Studio Motors source a Porsche 964 Carrera RS?
