The Story

The 991.2 is the 911 that turbocharged the everyday Carrera — and, to many sceptics’ surprise, made it better. The 2016 facelift replaced the 991.1’s naturally-aspirated flat-six with a new 3.0-litre twin-turbo unit across the entire Carrera range (370 PS base, 420 PS S, 450 PS GTS), adding a wave of mid-range torque and effortless pace while just about preserving the 911’s character. Purists mourned the lost NA top-end howl, but reviewers agreed the turbo Carrera was faster, more flexible and more usable than ever. The GTS — the sweet spot of the range — became the ‘ultimate normal 911,’ and the 991.2 remains a brilliant, attainable, do-everything modern 911.

Questions

911 (991.2) FAQ

What engine does the Porsche 911 991.2 Carrera GTS use?

The 991.2 Carrera GTS uses a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six producing 444 hp (450 PS) and 405 lb-ft of torque. This engine replaced the naturally aspirated 3.8-litre unit used in the 991.1 GTS from the 2016 model year onwards.

Why did Porsche switch the 991.2 Carrera range to turbocharged engines?

With the 2016 991.2 facelift, Porsche moved the entire Carrera range to a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six to meet tightening Euro 6 emissions standards while simultaneously increasing power and torque. It was the first time the base 911 Carrera had ever used a forced-induction engine, marking a fundamental shift in 911 philosophy.

What is a Porsche 911 991.2 GTS worth today?

The 991.2 Carrera GTS trades in the $64,000-$215,000 range depending on variant and specification, with Carrera 4 GTS and manual coupes commanding the highest prices. Hagerty provides condition-based valuations for all 991.2 body styles.

How does the 991.2 differ from the 991.1 Carrera?

The 991.2 (2016-2019) replaced the naturally aspirated 3.4 and 3.8-litre flat-sixes of the 991.1 with a new 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged engine, added rear-axle steering as a factory option, and updated the styling. Power increased across all variants while fuel consumption improved, though purists prefer the 991.1 for its naturally aspirated character.

Can I finance a Porsche 911 991.2 Carrera GTS?

Yes. Specialist lenders offer collector-car loans and leases on 991.2-generation 911s.
