Porsche 914
1969–1976 · Porsche 914 — Sports Car, Flat-4, designed by Heinrich Klie.
The Story
The 914 is the misunderstood, mid-engined Porsche that’s finally getting its due. A joint venture with Volkswagen launched in 1969, it was an affordable, Targa-topped, mid-engined two-seater — sold as a ‘VW-Porsche’ in much of the world, which long earned it scorn from badge snobs. But the layout was pure sports car: a low-slung, beautifully-balanced mid-engine chassis that bonds car and driver to the road. Most got a flat-four (the VW-derived Type 4); the rare, coveted 914/6 used Porsche’s own 2.0-litre flat-six. For decades it was the cheap-Porsche punchline; now, with air-cooled values soaring, the 914 (and especially the 914/6) is a sought-after, appreciating modern classic — Hagerty calls it ‘no longer Porsche’s ugly duckling.’

The Designer
Heinrich Klie
Klie ran Porsche’s modelling studio and was one of F. A. Porsche’s key lieutenants, best known for authoring the production 914’s shape after an internal design competition. His hands-on clay and model work underpinned several 1950s–60s Porsche racers.
Studio Motors POV
The underrated mid-engine Porsche, finally appreciated — affordable, balanced and a genuine driver’s car. A rust-free 2.0 four is a brilliant-value classic; a 914/6 is the grail. Buy the best, rust-free, documented example you can.

What Reviewers Said About 914
Worth Knowing About the 914
3 Things You Didn’t Know
- 1) It was a Volkswagen-Porsche joint venture, sold as a 'VW-Porsche' in many markets — the source of both its low price and its long-standing image problem. 2) The rare 914/6 used Porsche's own 2.0-litre flat-six — and now rivals or exceeds some 911s in value (six-figure sales are here). 3) Its mid-engine layout gives it balance the rear-engine 911 of the era couldn't match — a genuine, if underrated, driver's car.

Studio Buyer’s Brief
The 914/6 (Porsche flat-six) is the blue-chip; among the fours, the 2.0-litre is the sweet spot. Rust is the great enemy (check the battery tray, longerons, jacking points and ‘hell hole’); a sound, rust-free, documented car is essential — restoration costs can exceed values. A good four is the most satisfying cheap Porsche; a 914/6 is a serious collectible.

Questions
914 FAQ
What is the difference between the Porsche 914 and the 914/6?
The 914 (1969-1976) used Volkswagen-sourced flat-four engines — 1.7 L on early cars, 1.8 L later, and 2.0 L from 1973 — and was jointly developed and sold by Porsche and Volkswagen. The 914/6 (1969-1972) replaced the flat-four with a 2.0-litre Porsche flat-six producing 110 hp.
What is a Porsche 914/6 worth today?
The 914/6 averages approximately $86,650 in 2025-2026 markets, with excellent examples reaching around $120,000 and a record auction result of approximately $173,600. The flat-four 914 trades at a substantial discount, averaging around $25,000 for a clean example. Hagerty tracks both variants with dedicated valuations.
What engine does the Porsche 914 2.0 use?
The 914 2.0 (1973-1976) uses a 2.0-litre Volkswagen Type 4 flat-four driving the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual — mid-engine layout. U.S.-spec 1973 914 2.0 is listed around 95 hp SAE net; European/DIN figures are about 100 PS (99 hp).
How does the 914/6 compare to the entry-level 911 of its era?
The 914/6 uses the same 110 hp flat-six engine as the 911 T but in a lighter, mid-engine body, giving it better handling balance than the rear-engine 911. However, its VW-co-developed origins and Targa body attracted criticism from buyers who wanted a pure Porsche identity. The 911 T offered more cabin refinement and Porsche heritage cachet; the 914/6 offered superior dynamics for the same money.
