The Story

The 911 R is the car that proved Porsche understood its enthusiasts better than they thought. Revealed at Geneva in 2016 and limited to 991 examples, it took the 991 GT3 RS’s 500-PS, 9,000-rpm naturally-aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six and did the unthinkable for the era: bolted it to a six-speed MANUAL, deleted the giant wing for a clean classic silhouette, stripped weight, and tuned it for the road rather than the Nürburgring. It was a love letter to the analog 911 at the exact moment Porsche was going turbo and PDK everywhere — and the market lost its mind, with cars spiking far above the ~$185k MSRP almost overnight. It remains one of the most desirable modern 911s ever built.

Studio Motors POV

The car that made Porsche bring the manual back. The 911 R is the modern analog grail — the GT3 RS engine with three pedals and no wing; buy the most honest, original example you can.

Worth Knowing About the 911 R (991)

3 Things You Didn’t Know

  • 1) Just 991 were built — a deliberate nod to the 991 generation. 2) It used the GT3 RS's 4.0-litre engine but with a manual the RS didn't then offer — the R was the purist's manual GT3 RS. 3) Speculation was so frenzied that prices spiked past £1m in 2016–17 before settling — and the R's success pushed Porsche to re-offer a manual on the next GT3 and to build the 911 S/T.

5 Fast Facts

  1. • 991 units, 2016. • 4.0L NA flat-six (GT3 RS-derived, MA1.76), 500 PS (493 hp), 9,000 rpm. • 6-speed MANUAL only, no fixed wing — the purist's 911. • MSRP ~$185,000; spiked far above it on release. • A modern grail: ~$400k–$700k today.

Provenance

Owners & what to look for

Famous Owners

FLAG: no documented/citable celebrity owner found — excluded rather than guessed. The 991-car run went to Porsche’s most valued collectors (allocations were famously hard to get).

Studio Buyer’s Brief

Originality and low mileage drive everything on a 991-car grail. Verify it’s unmodified with full history; the signature white-with-red-or-green stripes is the iconic look, though solid colours exist. First-owner/allocation provenance adds value. As the car that revived the manual GT 911, it’s a buy-and-hold blue-chip.

Questions

911 R (991) FAQ

What engine and gearbox does the Porsche 911 R use?

The 911 R uses the 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six from the 991 GT3 RS, producing 493 hp (500 PS) at 8,250 rpm. Uniquely, it is paired exclusively with a 6-speed manual gearbox — no PDK option — making it a purist collector’s choice within the modern 911 lineage.

How many Porsche 911 Rs were produced?

Porsche built exactly 991 examples of the 911 R, all produced in 2016. The production number was chosen to echo the 991 generation/model designation. Revealed at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, all units were spoken for immediately.

What is the Porsche 911 R worth today?

The 911 R trades in the $400,000-$700,000 range in the current market, with pristine low-mileage examples reaching higher. Hagerty reported the model’s condition-1 values above $485,000 and noted prices briefly peaked above $1.1 million in 2016-2017 before normalising. It remains one of the most valuable modern 911s.

How does the 911 R differ from the 911 GT3 Touring?

The 911 R (2016) was the original wingless, manual-only 911 and is limited to 991 units. The GT3 Touring Package (2017) followed as a production option on the 991.2 GT3, also wingless and manual, but built in far higher numbers and at a lower price. The 911 R commands a substantial collector premium over the Touring due to its limited production and historical significance as the instigator of the trend.
