The Story

The F50 was built to mark Ferrari’s 50th anniversary, produced 1995–1997 with the explicit ambition of putting a Formula 1 car on the road. Where rivals chased turbocharged numbers, Ferrari did the opposite: it dropped in a naturally-aspirated 4.7-litre V12 (tipo F130B) whose bloodline runs directly back to the 3.5-litre V12 of the 1990 Ferrari 641 Formula 1 car, by way of the 333 SP sportscar that raced in IMSA in 1994. The result made 513 hp (520 PS) at 8,500 rpm and revved like nothing else of its era — the closest thing to a Grand Prix engine ever sold with a number plate.

The engineering was as radical as the powerplant. The F50 was Ferrari’s first road car built around a carbon-fibre monocoque, and the V12 was bolted directly to the rear of that tub as a fully STRESSED member of the chassis, with the rear suspension hung off the six-speed gearbox — exactly as a contemporary F1 car was built. No power steering, no ABS, no driver aids, no turbo to soften the experience; just a removable targa-style hardtop (with a barchetta top available) and a direct mechanical line from the road to the driver’s hands.

For years the F50 lived in the shadow of the savage, turbocharged F40 that preceded it; many enthusiasts dismissed its styling and questioned whether it had the F40’s menace. Time has comprehensively reversed that verdict. As collectors recognised that its analog, naturally-aspirated, F1-derived V12 and stressed-chassis architecture made it a genuine one-off in the halo lineage, values surged into the multi-millions. It now reads as the purest ‘F1 for the road’ Ferrari ever built.

Studio Motors POV

The F50 is the one time Ferrari took a Formula 1 engine, bolted it to a carbon tub as a structural member, and handed you the keys with no filter, no turbo, no electronics — just a screaming 8,500-rpm V12 wired straight to your spine. History was wrong to overlook it; this is the most honest ‘F1 for the road’ the company ever made.

Worth Knowing About the F50

3 Things You Didn’t Know

  • • The V12's bloodline is literally Formula 1: developed from the 3.5L V12 of the 1990 Ferrari 641 F1 car (the Mansell/Prost era) and first run in the 333 SP sportscar before being enlarged to 4.7L for the F50.
  • • The engine isn't just mounted in the chassis, it IS part of the chassis — bolted directly to the carbon tub as a fully stressed member, with the rear suspension attached to the gearbox (an F1 layout that deleted the rear subframe).
  • • Ferrari deliberately built only 349, 'so it is said, one fewer than they thought they could sell,' to guarantee rarity — and in the US the cars were unusually LEASED rather than sold outright, to stop buyers flipping them for instant profit.

Provenance

Owners & what to look for

Famous Owners

Ralph Lauren — documented original owner of a 1995 F50 in the extremely rare Giallo Modena (yellow), one of only two US-spec yellow cars; he drove it ~3,300 miles before it sold via Paul Russell & Company in 2003, and it was offered by RM Sotheby’s at Monterey 2025 (Robb Report / RM Sotheby’s). (No other documented celebrity owner verified. Note: a separate 1995 F50 stolen from Algar Ferrari became the subject of a US federal court case — that car’s notoriety is the theft/FBI crash, not a celebrity owner.)

Studio Buyer’s Brief

The overwhelming majority left the factory in Rosso Corsa; a small number were finished in yellow (Giallo Modena, ~31 cars), and a few in black or silver — rarity colours command strong premiums. Verify the car retains its removable hardtop (ideally with the original ‘flight box,’ barchetta top, roll bars and leather pouch); completeness matters. With only 349 built, prioritise documented provenance, low mileage and Ferrari Classiche certification. Values have risen hard and broadly sit in the multi-million range, with the best, lowest-mileage and celebrity-provenance cars now well above the typical $3.5M–$5M band.

Questions

F50 FAQ

What are the Ferrari F50’s key specifications?

The F50 uses a naturally aspirated 4,698cc V12 producing 520 hp at 8,500 rpm in a carbon-fibre monocoque body with F1-style pushrod suspension at all four corners. Ferrari produced exactly 349 examples between 1995 and 1997, offered as a targa coupe or open roadster by removing the roof panel, with 0-62 mph in approximately 3.9 seconds and a top speed of approximately 202 mph (325 km/h).

What was the significance of the Ferrari F50’s engine?

The F50’s Tipo F130B 4.7L V12 is derived from the 3.5L V12 used in Ferrari’s 1990 641 Formula One car (Tipo 036 lineage). Ferrari’s Tipo 044/044-1 was the later 1995 F1 V12, so the F50’s engine is a road-going evolution of the 1990-era F1 architecture rather than the 044.

How does the Ferrari F50 compare to the F40 it followed?

The F50 replaced the F40’s 478 hp twin-turbocharged V8 with a 520 hp naturally aspirated V12 derived from Formula 1, switching from forced induction to a higher-revving, more naturally linear power delivery. Where the F40 stripped out everything non-essential, the F50 introduced a proper interior and a more resolved body — a more civilised approach that some critics felt was less uncompromising than the F40’s philosophy.

What is a Ferrari F50 worth at auction?

F50 market: Hagerty shows about $5.85M for a good 1995 F50; Classic.com shows an average around $5.79M; 2026 public sales support the strong current market for well-preserved 349-example F50s bridging F40 to Enzo in the halo lineage.

Can you source a Ferrari F50 through Studio Motors?

Yes. The F50 is one of Ferrari’s rarest halo models — 349 examples combining an F1-derived V12 with a carbon-fibre monocoque, pushrod suspension, and targa body. It occupies a critical position between the F40 and Enzo in the pinnacle Ferrari hierarchy.
