The Story
When Ferrari pulled the covers off the Monza SP1 and SP2 in September 2018, it wasn’t just launching a car — it was launching a philosophy. The Monzas are the inaugural pair of the ‘Icona’ series, a strand of strictly limited, retro-futurist specials that mine Ferrari’s own back catalogue rather than chasing the next technological frontier. The muse is the barchetta — the stripped, roofless, windscreen-less sports-racers of the 1950s like the 750 Monza and 860 Monza — reimagined in carbon fibre with modern aero. The SP1 is a single-seater; the SP2 adds a second seat. Both are pure speedsters: no roof, no windscreen, just driver, sky and a long V12-cocooning bonnet.
Under that bonnet sits the heart of the matter: a 6.5L naturally aspirated V12 (the F140 GC) making 799 hp / 810 PS at 8,500 rpm — at launch the most powerful engine Ferrari had ever put in a road car, a crown it held until the 812 Competizione (2021). Built on an aluminium chassis derived from the 812 Superfast and bodied in carbon fibre with F1 techniques, the SP1 hits 100 km/h in 2.9 s and tops 300 km/h. Just 499 were built across both versions, ~€1.6M each, sold only to Ferrari’s most loyal clients.
Why it matters: the Monza SP redefined what a flagship Ferrari could be. Instead of more downforce and more buttons, it offered less — less weather protection, less isolation, less compromise between driver and engine. Arguably the purest expression of the modern front-engined V12 Ferrari, it set the template for a collectible bloodline (the Daytona SP3 followed as Icona No. 2) and in 2020 the SP1 won the Compasso d’Oro, one of design’s most prestigious honours.
