The Story
The F12tdf landed in October 2015 as the savage, track-bred sendoff to the F12berlinetta — and to an era. It revived ‘tdf,’ the badge born of the 250 GT Berlinetta that dominated the Tour de France auto race in the late 1950s, and carried Ferrari’s last great front-mid V12 to its sharpest extreme. The 6.3L NA V12 (F140 FG) gained variable-geometry intakes and a redline near 8,900 rpm, lifting output to 769 hp (780 PS). Just 799 were built, each ~110 kg lighter than the standard F12 (~1,415 kg dry).
What made the tdf historically significant wasn’t only the power — it was the chassis. It debuted Ferrari’s ‘Passo Corto Virtuale’ (Virtual Short Wheelbase) rear-wheel-steering, engineered to give a long-wheelbase GT the agility of something far shorter. With wider front tyres, an 87% downforce increase and nearly double the F12’s aero efficiency, it lapped Fiorano in 1:21 — two seconds quicker than the berlinetta, within striking distance of the LaFerrari.
It matters as the high-water mark of the analog-leaning NA Ferrari V12 berlinetta: brutal, demanding, gloriously old-school in a world tilting to hybrids and turbos. Already spoken of in the same breath as the Daytona and F40.
