The Story

When the 458 Speciale broke cover at the 2013 Frankfurt show, it carried a claim no rival could match: its 4.5L flat-plane F136 FB V8 made 605 cv (597 hp) at a screaming 9,000 rpm, a specific output of ~135 cv/litre that Ferrari billed as a world record for a naturally aspirated road-car engine. This was the hardcore, track-honed distillation of the 458 Italia in the tradition of the 360 Challenge Stradale and 430 Scuderia: ~90 kg lighter than the Italia, sharper, louder, built to be driven on the limit. Crucially, it would prove the last of its kind — the 458’s successor, the 488, swapped natural aspiration for twin turbos, making the Speciale the final naturally aspirated, mid-engined V8 special in Ferrari’s history.

What made it more than a power figure was the engineering around the engine. The Speciale debuted Ferrari’s active aerodynamics — patented movable flaps front and rear that reconfigure the car for maximum downforce in corners and minimum drag on the straights — and marked the world debut of Side Slip Control (SSC), an algorithm that continuously estimates the car’s slip angle and meters torque and the e-diff to let a driver lean on the car with extraordinary confidence. The aero-driven restyle of Pininfarina’s 458 shape was executed in-house by the Ferrari Styling Centre under Flavio Manzoni — the first time such work was done entirely at Maranello.

Today the Speciale is widely regarded as a future blue-chip. It won evo’s Car of the Year in 2014, and as the ‘last of’ the naturally aspirated mid-V8 line its values have climbed sharply. That combination — a genuine high-water mark of the NA era and a limited, emotionally resonant special — is exactly the formula collectors prize.

Studio Motors POV

The 458 Speciale is the closing argument of Ferrari’s naturally aspirated mid-V8 era — the 9,000-rpm full stop on a story that ran from the 360 Challenge Stradale onward, and that finality, more than any single number, is what makes it a permanent blue-chip rather than just a fast used Ferrari.

Worth Knowing About the 458 Speciale

3 Things You Didn’t Know

  • • At launch its V8 was billed as the most powerful naturally aspirated production V8 ever, with the highest specific output for a road NA engine (~135 cv/litre), helped by a 14:1 compression ratio Ferrari called a record.
  • • It was the world debut of Side Slip Control (SSC), a slip-angle algorithm that later filtered across the Ferrari range, paired with patented active aerodynamics (movable front + rear flaps).
  • • The open 458 Speciale A ('Aperta') was limited to 499 units and was, at launch, the most powerful naturally aspirated Ferrari convertible ever — until the LaFerrari Aperta.

5 Fast Facts

  3. • 0–100 km/h in 3.0 s; top speed 325 km/h (202 mph).

Owners & what to look for

Famous Owners

James May (The Grand Tour / former Top Gear) — ordered a 458 Speciale after the books closed, reported as the last example built, and wrote about it in his Sunday Times column. Ian Poulter (pro golfer) — owns a one-off 458 Speciale A built through Ferrari’s Tailor Made program in Italian-flag green/white/red livery (Carscoops / CarBuzz).

Studio Buyer’s Brief

The two cars to know are the coupe Speciale and the 499-unit, open Speciale A — dramatically rarer and at a large premium (recent condition-#2 Speciale A values have run well past $1.6M vs high-six-figures for coupes). Provenance and originality drive money: the NART-style racing-stripe livery and Tailor Made specs are desirable, but a flawless full Ferrari history and a specialist PPI are non-negotiable given how sharply values have appreciated. Watch for early-car transmission/clutch electronics, the 2010-era wheel-arch-adhesive fire recall, arch corrosion, cracked early exhaust manifolds, dash leather shrinkage, and the true condition of the carbon-ceramic brakes (confirmed only by weighing the discs). Inspect all carbon aero (splitter, skirts, diffuser). The thesis is simple: the LAST naturally aspirated, mid-engined V8 special Ferrari ever — be wary of buying at the very top of a fast-moving market.

Questions

458 Speciale FAQ

What are the Ferrari 458 Speciale’s key performance specifications?

The 458 Speciale extracts 597 hp (605 PS) from the same 4.5-litre V8 as the standard 458 Italia — a 35 hp gain through revised camshafts, intake manifolds, and exhaust — and is up to 90 kg lighter in its minimum-specification configuration. Ferrari’s official 0-62 mph time is 3.0 seconds, with a 202 mph (325 km/h) top speed.

What technological first did the Ferrari 458 Speciale introduce?

The 458 Speciale was the first production Ferrari to feature Side Slip Control (SSC), a system that reads the car’s real-time yaw and slip angles and coordinates the E-Diff, traction control, and stability control to allow controlled oversteer within calibrated limits. It was the first factory system specifically designed to manage — rather than simply prevent — tail-out driving on a road Ferrari.

How does the Ferrari 458 Speciale differ from the standard 458 Italia?

The 458 Speciale adds 35 hp over the 458 Italia (605 hp vs 570 hp), sheds ~90 kg through structural and material lightening, and adds Side Slip Control (SSC) plus more aggressive aero and revised suspension. Both the Italia and Speciale had standard carbon-ceramic brakes; the Speciale upgraded to more track-focused pad and cooling specification rather than introducing CCBs.

What is a Ferrari 458 Speciale worth at auction?

The 458 Speciale market has appreciated significantly — Hagerty Insider reports #2-condition Speciale values around $845,000 as of 2026, and Classic.com/Hagerty data show Speciale trading well above the older $230-350K bands often quoted. Speciale A commands additional premium.

Can you source a Ferrari 458 Speciale through Studio Motors?

Yes. The 458 Speciale is the last naturally aspirated Ferrari V8 performance variant — the direct successor to the 430 Scuderia and 360 Challenge Stradale — and is increasingly sought after as turbocharged successors dominate the current range.
