Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale
2003–2004 · Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale — Supercar, V8, designed by Goran Popović.
The Story
When Ferrari pulled the covers off the 360 Challenge Stradale at the 2003 Geneva show, it was doing something it hadn’t in the modern era: building a road car with a racetrack’s priorities. Derived from the 360 Challenge one-make racer, the Stradale stripped ~110 kg out of the 360 Modena (to ~1,280 kg vs ~1,390) by deleting sound deadening, fitting carbon mirrors and seat shells, lightweight bumpers and Lexan windows. The 3.6L NA V8 (tipo F131, the last of the ‘Dino’-lineage V8s) was lifted to 425 PS (~419 hp) at 8,500 rpm; the chassis dropped 15 mm on titanium springs, downforce rose ~50%, and Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes arrived as standard. The numbers were modest on paper; the transformation in feel was not.
What makes the CS matter isn’t straight-line speed but what it started. As evo’s Adam Towler put it, ‘it sets out the template for this entire bloodline.’ That bloodline is now Ferrari canon: the 430 Scuderia, 458 Speciale, 488 Pista and 2025’s 296 Speciale all trace their stripped-out, track-honed philosophy directly to this car. The CS was the proof of concept that a lighter, harder, more focused mid-V8 special could be the most desirable Ferrari in the range, not a penalty box.
Roughly 1,288 were built across 2003–2004 (Ferrari never published an exact figure; sources cluster ~1,288–1,300), every factory car wearing the F1 paddle-shift. Two decades on, it’s regarded as evo ‘royalty’ and the original 911 GT3 RS rival, and has graduated from used-Ferrari curiosity to genuine blue-chip collectible.

Studio Motors POV
This is the one that started it all — the first modern Ferrari to prove that lighter, louder and harder beats more luxurious, and every 430 Scuderia, 458 Speciale and 488 Pista owes its existence to it. A genuinely analogue, last-of-the-Dino-V8 driver’s car that’s earned its blue-chip status honestly.

What Reviewers Said About 360 Challenge Stradale
Worth Knowing About the 360 Challenge Stradale
3 Things You Didn’t Know
- • Optioned with Alcantara trim, Lexan windows and no comfort extras, the CS weighed ~110 kg less than a 360 Modena (~1,280 vs ~1,390 kg).
- • The famous Tricolore Italian-flag stripe was a pricey, low-take-rate option (~£3,100 / $5,479) fitted to only ~20–25% of cars.
- • NO factory six-speed manual was ever offered — every Challenge Stradale left Maranello with the F1 paddle-shift; any 'manual CS' today is an aftermarket conversion.
5 Fast Facts
- • ~1,288 built across 2003–2004 — the rarest 360 variant.
- • 425 PS (419 hp) @ 8,500 rpm from the 3.6L NA V8 (tipo F131).
- • 0–100 km/h in 4.1 s (Ferrari); rev-limited top speed ~283 km/h (186 mph (Ferrari's official claim)).
- • Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes standard — a first that later carried to the F430.
- • Designed by Pininfarina, the 360's lines led by Goran Popović.
Provenance
Owners & what to look for
Famous Owners
Jean Todt (then Scuderia Ferrari general manager) — took delivery in June 2003 of an Argento Nürburgring CS built especially for him with custom plaques, believed one of the first 10 built (RM Sotheby’s, Monaco 2018). (An ‘Axl Rose owned one’ claim is social-media-only and UNVERIFIED → excluded.)
Studio Buyer’s Brief
The CS is appreciating hard — it’s the genesis of Ferrari’s revered special-series line, it’s rare (~1,288), and the market has caught on: entry prices sit around €250k, with pristine/rare-spec cars pushing toward seven figures (a 375-mile BRG example made a headline $1.87M at Mecum Kissimmee Jan 2026 — an anomaly, not the norm). Factory Tricolore-stripe cars command a premium (~20–25% take rate). There is NO factory gated manual — be sceptical of any ‘manual CS’ (a conversion). Budget to refinish the era’s sticky soft-touch plastics; on the F1 box watch the pump relay and clutch/accumulator, and check early cars for cracked exhaust manifolds. Documented history and originality (intact Lexan, factory stripe, matching plaques) separate a good buy from a money pit.

Questions
360 Challenge Stradale FAQ
What are the Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale’s key performance specifications?
The 360 Challenge Stradale produces 419 hp (425 PS) from the same 3.6-litre V8 as the standard 360 Modena — a 24 hp increase — and weighs up to 110 kg less when fully optioned with lightweight components. Ferrari quotes 0-62 mph in 4.1 seconds, and it laps Fiorano 3.5 seconds faster than the standard 360 Modena.
How does the Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale differ from the standard 360 Modena?
The Challenge Stradale adds 24 hp, saves up to 110 kg through carbon-fibre components and a stripped interior, and fits dedicated aerodynamic body modifications and stiffer track-tuned suspension. It also received the carbon-ceramic brake system from the Enzo — the first time that technology appeared on a Ferrari road car outside the Enzo itself.
What role did the Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale play in Ferrari’s history?
The 360 Challenge Stradale was Ferrari’s first factory-built road-legal performance variant of a mid-engine V8 — previous high-performance editions had been dealer-installed upgrades rather than factory specials. It established the template Ferrari refined into the F430 Scuderia in 2007 and continued through the 458 Speciale, 488 Pista, and 296 Speciale.
What is a Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale worth at auction?
The 360 Challenge Stradale traded for $445,000 at Gooding Amelia 2025. Classic.com now shows a 360 Challenge Stradale CMB around $396,000 with the average in that neighborhood — appreciating firmly as Ferrari’s first modern lightweight Speciale.
Can you source a Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale through Studio Motors?
Yes. With only 1,288 units built, the 360 Challenge Stradale is among the rarest and most sought-after mid-engine Ferraris of the early 2000s.
