Ferrari 328 GTB / GTS
1985–1989 · Ferrari 328 GTB / GTS — Sports Car, V8, designed by Leonardo Fioravanti.
The Story
The 328 GTB and GTS, introduced at the September 1985 Frankfurt Salon alongside the Mondial 3.2, was the final and most fully developed evolution of the transverse mid-engined V8 line that began with the 308 in 1975. Rather than a clean-sheet design, it was a careful refinement: Leonardo Fioravanti’s original 308 wedge was softened with a redesigned, body-coloured nose and a matching tail valance, the round tail lamps and overall silhouette carried over, the cabin modernised. Underneath, the Quattrovalvole V8 grew from 3.0 to 3.2 litres (3,185cc), retaining Bosch K-Jetronic injection but adding Marelli Microplex ignition for a claimed 270 bhp at 7,000 rpm through a five-speed manual.
The result is widely regarded as the best-sorted of the classic ‘analog’ mid-V8 Ferraris. After roughly a decade of continuous development on the same architecture, the 328 arrived with chassis, engine and ergonomics finally dialled in, earning a reputation for unusual reliability and usability for a Ferrari of its era — much of the routine maintenance can be done without dropping the engine. Built 1985–1989, it was among the last Ferraris engineered and launched in Enzo Ferrari’s lifetime, and the last of the round-tail-light cars before the angular, all-new 348 of 1989.
Across its four-year run, 7,412 cars were built before the 348 superseded it, making it both the most numerous and arguably the most enjoyed of the line. It sits today as the connoisseur’s pick among affordable vintage Ferraris: pure, light, naturally aspirated, unassisted, and the last word on a design language Ferrari had spent a decade perfecting.

Studio Motors POV
If you want one analog, naturally aspirated, fully-sorted classic Ferrari to actually drive, the 328 is it — a decade of 308 development distilled into the most usable and reliable of the round-tail mid-V8s. It is the connoisseur’s value pick precisely because it asks for nothing and delivers everything the era promised.

What Reviewers Said About 328 GTB / GTS
Worth Knowing About the 328 GTB / GTS
3 Things You Didn’t Know
- • The targa-topped GTS outsold the GTB coupe by nearly FIVE to one: 6,068 GTS against just 1,344 GTB — so the 'rarer' body style is actually the closed berlinetta.
- • The only major mechanical update came late (early 1988, from chassis 76626): revised suspension geometry and a switch from concave to convex 16-inch 'star' wheels, with ABS offered on these later cars (all US 1989 models got ABS).
- • The contemporary Mondial 3.2 used the EXACT same 3.2L V8 — it is a V8 2+2, not a four-cylinder car (a common misconception worth correcting).
5 Fast Facts
- • ~7,412 built total (1,344 GTB + 6,068 GTS), 1985–1989.
- • 3.2L (3,185cc) naturally aspirated transverse mid-mounted Quattrovalvole V8, Tipo F105CB.
- • Claimed ~270 bhp at 7,000 rpm; 5-speed manual.
- • Top speed ~163 mph (GTS) / ~166 mph (GTB); 0–60 mph in ~5.5–6.0 s.
- • Styled by Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina, hand-built by Scaglietti — a refined restyle of the 308.

Studio Buyer’s Brief
Body style and rarity: the GTB coupe is far rarer (1,344 vs 6,068) and low-mileage GTBs command the strongest money; the GTS is more plentiful and easier to find. Pre-ABS vs ABS: cars from chassis 76626 (early 1988) on have revised suspension and convex wheels (US 1989 = ABS) — purists sometimes prefer the earlier non-ABS examples, while later cars offer the braking upgrade. Values ~$75k–$175k+, with exceptional low-mile ‘time-capsule’ cars well into six figures (a 244-mile example reportedly reached ~$335k in 2024). Confirm the cam-belt service is current (a major cost) and seek Ferrari Classiche on the best cars; inspect for rust in the usual European-steel areas.

Questions
328 GTB / GTS FAQ
What does 328 mean and what are the Ferrari 328’s key specifications?
The 328 designation encodes 3.2 litres and 8 cylinders — the mid-mounted V8 displaces 3,186cc, giving 32 tenths of a litre (3.2L) plus 8 cylinders. The fuel-injected Quattrovalvole V8 produces approximately 270 hp at 7,000 rpm, reaching 62 mph in approximately 5.5 seconds with a top speed of approximately 165 mph (266 km/h). Ferrari built approximately 1,344 GTB coupes and 6,068 GTS targas between 1985 and 1989.
What was the Ferrari 328’s place in the 308 model family?
The 328 GTB and GTS were the final evolution of the 308 lineage that began in 1975, representing the tenth year of continuous development of Ferrari’s mid-engine V8 road car formula. Where the 308 launched with carburetors and a fibreglass body before switching to steel and fuel injection, the 328 standardised all the refinements — larger displacement, fuel injection, and Quattrovalvole cylinder heads — as production came to a close in 1989.
How does the Ferrari 328 GTB / GTS compare to the 308 GTB / GTS it replaced?
The 328 raises displacement from 3.0 to 3.2 litres and increases output from approximately 255 hp to approximately 270 hp, with improved low-rpm torque from the larger bore and revised fuel injection mapping. Externally, the 328 is distinguished by colour-keyed bumpers, a revised rear valance, and a slightly revised interior — evolutionary changes that refined rather than reinvented the proven 308 formula.
What is a Ferrari 328 GTB or GTS worth today?
328 market: Classic.com shows 328 GTB CMB around $172K versus GTS around $112K, with low-mile examples trading higher than older $85K-$145K bands. GTB commands a premium over GTS reflecting rarity — full service history and originality drive top values.
Can you source a Ferrari 328 GTB or GTS through Studio Motors?
Yes. The 328 GTB and GTS represent the most refined version of the classic 308 formula — mid-engine V8 performance in the iconic Pininfarina body, with fuel injection and Quattrovalvole heads standard throughout.
