The Story

The 720S is the McLaren that silenced the doubters. By 2017 McLaren had been accused of building clinical, slightly soulless cars — then it launched the second-generation Super Series and built, by near-unanimous critical verdict, the most complete supercar on sale. An all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 (the M840T) made 710 bhp; a new Monocage II carbon structure wove the roof into the tub; and the alien “eye-socket” headlights doubled as cooling ducts.

What made it special wasn’t just speed — though it ran neck-and-neck with the McLaren P1 around a circuit and comfortably dispatched the Ferrari 488. It was that the 720S finally married that pace to a sense of occasion and a ride/handling breadth nothing else could touch. Top Gear called it the most accomplished supercar it had ever driven.

With more than 5,000 built and values now well under list, the 720S has become the thinking enthusiast’s modern-supercar bargain: hypercar pace for Porsche money.

  • 1. The alien "eye-socket" headlight cavities aren't just styling — they're aero ducts channelling air to the low-temperature radiators.
  • 2. The Folding Driver Display drops to a slim strip in track mode and deploys as you open the door — theatre and function.
  • 3. The all-new 4.0 M840T is ~41% new parts versus the old 3.8, and the Monocage II carbon structure now includes the roof.

5 Fast Facts

  1. 1. 710 bhp from the new 4.0L M840T; 212 mph; 0–62 mph in 2.8 s.
  2. 2. Lighter and faster than the 650S; ran circuit times near the P1.
  3. 3. More than 5,000 built (Coupe + Spider), 2017–2023.
  4. 4. Launched ~$284,745; now averages ~$245K used.
  5. 5. Widely judged to beat the Ferrari 488 GTB of its day.

Owners & what to look for

Famous Owners

Michael Fux — the noted collector commissioned a one-off 720S in bespoke “Fux Fuchsia” (a colour created for him, to which he holds exclusive rights), delivered at the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours; it joined his McLaren-Orange 12C, bespoke-purple 12C Spider and bespoke-green P1 (Autocar / evo).

Studio Buyer’s Brief

The benchmark drive of its generation, so almost any clean example delights. Decide between the standard car and the more focused Track Pack; the Spider adds drama for little dynamic cost. As ever, prioritise service history and sorted electronics. At current values it’s arguably the most ability-per-dollar on the used market.
