The Story
The McLaren GT is the company’s most divisive car — not because it’s bad, but because of what it claims to be. McLaren took its mid-engine, carbon-tubbed supercar architecture, fitted a detuned 612 bhp version of the 4.0 V8, softened the ride, and added a long glazed tailgate with a heated, carpeted load bay big enough for golf clubs or skis (420 litres behind, 150 up front). The pitch: a grand tourer to rival the Bentley Continental GT and Aston DB11.
The reality is more interesting. Critics broadly agreed the GT is a lovely thing to drive — quieter and more comfortable than other McLarens — but questioned whether a mid-engine supercar can really be a grand tourer. Top Gear’s verdict: “a compromised GT.” CarThrottle simply asked if it was “the most confusing supercar there is.”
Understood for what it actually is — a softened, more usable McLaren supercar rather than a true front-engine GT — it’s a genuinely appealing and now well-depreciated way into the brand.
