The Story
The 650S exists because McLaren has thick skin and good ears. The 12C had been pilloried as clinical, so in 2014 — barely three years in — McLaren rebuilt roughly half of it, grafted on the new P1’s face and aero, lifted power to 641 bhp, and gave it a name that finally meant something (650 PS). Officially a new model; in practice, the 12C finished.
It worked. The 650S kept the carbon tub, the hydraulic ProActive suspension and the breadth-of-ability party trick, but added the visual drama and front-end bite the 12C was accused of missing. For two years it was McLaren’s Super Series mainstay, until the 720S moved the game on again.
It’s now an under-the-radar used-supercar sweet spot: P1 looks and most of the ability, at a fraction of the money.
