The Story
The Murcielago had the impossible job: replace the Diablo AND prove Audi’s new ownership wouldn’t sand the madness off Lamborghini. It did both. Luc Donckerwolke — later design boss at Bentley, Audi and Genesis — drew a car cleaner than the Diablo but no less intimidating, its scissor doors and shark-gill intakes hiding the last and largest evolution of the Bizzarrini V12 that started everything back in 1963.
Named for a fighting bull so brave the matador spared its life in 1879, the Murcielago became the analog V12’s grand finale. The LP640 made 631 hp and ran 207 mph (on Top Gear, at Dunsfold); the savage LP670-4 SV (just 186 built) closed the book with 661. But the cars collectors hunt now are the gated six-speed manuals — Lamborghini quietly built a handful, and fewer than ten open-top manuals are thought to exist. It was also Bruce Wayne’s daily, gliding through The Dark Knight.
This is the last Lamborghini flagship with a true clutch pedal and an engine descended in an unbroken line from the Miura. After it came paddles and, eventually, hybrids. The Murcielago is where the old religion ended.
