The Story

The Gallardo is the car that saved Lamborghini — and the one purists were supposed to sneer at. It was the ‘baby’ Lambo, the Audi-era V10 built to sell in numbers the hand-built V12s never could. It worked: 14,022 left Sant’Agata between 2003 and 2013, more than every previous Lamborghini combined. For a company that had flirted with bankruptcy for decades, the Gallardo was oxygen.

Luc Donckerwolke’s wedge wrapped a 5.0-litre (later 5.2) V10 shared with the Audi R8, and over a decade it spawned everything from the featherweight Superleggera to the rear-drive LP550-2 named for test-driver legend Valentino Balboni. It was the supercar you could actually use — exactly why Clarkson and Hammond bought their own.

Don’t mistake volume for blandness. As Clarkson put it, what the Gallardo has ‘massively in its favour is not ability or speed or technology, but passion, heart and sheer malevolent intent.’ James May was less kind: ‘a wonderful object, but a ridiculous car.’ They were both right. That’s the Gallardo.

Studio Motors POV

The Gallardo is the most usable Lamborghini ever — and the gated manuals and Balboni/Superleggera specials are quietly going collectible. We point first-timers at a clean LP560-4 and collectors at a manual or a Balboni. The car that saved Lamborghini is now the smart way into one.

Studio Buyer’s Brief

Gated manuals, the LP570-4 Superleggera and the rear-drive LP550-2 Balboni lead the market; later LP560-4s are the value buy. Watch e-gear clutch wear and service history. Manual + Balboni + Superleggera = the keepers.

Questions

Gallardo FAQ

How many Lamborghini Gallardos were made?

Exactly 14,022 Gallardos were produced between 2003 and 2013, making it the best-selling Lamborghini in the brand’s history at the time — more than every previous Lamborghini combined. It has since been surpassed by the Huracan.

What engine does the Lamborghini Gallardo use?

The Gallardo uses a naturally aspirated V10, beginning at 5.0 litres and 493 hp in early cars and growing to 5.2 litres and up to 562 hp in the LP570-4 Superleggera. The engine architecture is shared with the Audi R8.

What is the Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Balboni?

The LP550-2 Balboni is a 250-unit limited rear-wheel-drive Gallardo named after Lamborghini’s legendary test driver Valentino Balboni, who requested the rear-drive configuration. It produces 550 hp and weighs approximately 30 kg less than the standard AWD car.

How much does a used Lamborghini Gallardo cost?

Base Gallardo coupes and Spyders typically trade between $90,000 and $150,000. Collector variants — the LP570-4 Superleggera, LP550-2 Balboni, and gated-manual examples — often sit above $150,000, with the best documented cars exceeding $200,000 (e.g., a 2008 Gallardo Spyder 6-speed at $261,000 and an LP550-2 high at $274,400).

Can you still buy a Lamborghini Gallardo?

Yes. The Gallardo is widely available through specialist dealers and private sellers as the most accessible modern Lamborghini V10.
