The Story
The 1965 Silver Shadow was the most radical Rolls-Royce in a generation – and its best-seller ever. It abandoned the separate chassis for a monocoque body with all-independent suspension and disc brakes, making it smaller outside, roomier inside and far more usable. The combined Shadow run topped 30,000 cars, by far the most of any Rolls-Royce.
That accessibility made it the Rolls-Royce of the rock-and-roll age. Paul McCartney, Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, Muhammad Ali, Andy Warhol, Johnny Cash and Freddie Mercury all owned one, while David Bowie, Michael Caine and Elton John joined the waiting lists. For two decades, the Shadow simply was what a Rolls-Royce looked like.
