The Story

For one model year, Mercedes built the most expensive car it sold — then stopped at 300. The Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Cabriolet was the open-top apex of the S-Class range: the A217 cabriolet body, the 6.0 twin-turbo V12 (621 hp) shared with the S 65 AMG, and a level of trim and exclusivity Mercedes had never attempted in a droptop. Each car wears ‘1 of 300’ lettering on the console, cupholders, luggage and key, and shipped with a certificate of authenticity signed by Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche.

It was a statement, not a volume play — 75 came to the United States — and that scarcity is exactly why it behaves differently from a Maybach sedan. Where the saloon sheds a third of its value in three years, the Cabriolet has been called ‘a stranger to depreciation’: delivery-mile cars have changed hands near their ~$330k sticker years later. It is the rare modern Mercedes that was collectible the day it left the showroom.

Studio Motors POV

This is the modern Maybach that actually collects. A 300-unit V12 convertible Mercedes never replaced — buy the lowest-mileage, best-documented car you can find, because scarcity, not the badge, is doing the work here.

Worth Knowing About the Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Cabriolet

3 Things You Didn’t Know

  • • At launch it was Mercedes' single most expensive car — roughly $330,000 (€300,000 in Europe), 'the most expensive car in the current U.S. lineup' [CBS/CNN].
  • • Every car is individually numbered ('1 of 300' throughout) and shipped with a certificate of authenticity signed by Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche [Motor Authority].
  • • It shares its AMG-built 6.0 twin-turbo V12 with the S 65 AMG Cabriolet — in the Maybach, 621 hp / 738 lb-ft.

Provenance

Owners & what to look for

Famous Owners

• Ion Tiriac — the Romanian billionaire owns chassis #1 of 300, displayed in the Tiriac Collection museum with ‘Tiriac Collection’ stitched headrests; reportedly bought two [Tiriac Collection; Romania Insider].
• FLAG: a widely-repeated Floyd Mayweather claim traces only to content-farm listicles — excluded as unverified (his documented Maybach is the S 580 sedan).

Studio Buyer’s Brief

Provenance is the asset — confirm the matching ‘1 of 300’ number, the Zetsche-signed certificate and the Maybach luggage set are all present. Mileage is the single biggest price driver: sub-2,000-mile cars sit near $260k–$330k, higher-mile ones drop toward $185k. Budget for low-volume M279 V12 upkeep and insist on Mercedes/specialist history. Transaction volume is tiny (~6 logged sales), so treat averages as indicative.
